Visit virtually at the wrong times
Ask for audio from the bedroom at morning rush and late evening, not a midday clip. A street with buses and trucks can sound different when wet. Find out whether windows face directly onto the artery, a courtyard or a side street. Dual-aspect apartments can have one quiet room even when the living room is exposed.
Window glazing is not a simple yes/no
Double glazing, sealed frames, curtains and building gaps all influence sound, but a listing cannot promise a universal noise reduction. Request an unedited clip with windows open and closed, and ask if the bedroom has independent ventilation. Closing windows for quiet is less useful if the room then feels stuffy.
Ventilation and air quality are separate checks
High-traffic streets can mean higher exposure to vehicle pollution near open windows. An upper floor or air purifier may change comfort, but results vary and no host can guarantee air quality from a photo. Consider whether the apartment’s natural ventilation works without constantly opening the street-facing window.
Balance transit with sleep
People who commute daily may happily accept a busier location for transport access. Remote workers or light sleepers might prioritize a side street. Choose based on hours spent at home, bedroom placement and the actual route to work. Avoid assuming a neighborhood is universally quiet or loud.
