Photos are marketing, not an inspection. For a furnished stay, look past the listing headline and confirm details about the specific unit and agreement before committing funds.
Wide-angle distortion
A phone’s wide lens can make a compact room look enormous. Ask for a continuous video moving from the door to each corner and for approximate usable room dimensions. If a bedroom is described as suitable for two people, check whether there is space to open both sides of the bed and store luggage.
Old or mixed-unit images
A listing may combine professional lobby photos, model-unit décor and actual apartment pictures. Ask which images show the precise unit being offered now. Verify that the balcony view and kitchen belong to the same rental, and that furnishings shown in the gallery remain included in the inventory.
Avoid the silent-photo problem
An apartment beside a busy avenue can photograph beautifully with windows shut. Request short unedited clips at night and in the morning, with windows both open and closed. Ask about neighboring construction, rooftop equipment, bars and elevator noise. A high floor may improve a view without removing sound.
Look for missing details, not perfect color
Notice whether photos omit the bathroom shower, laundry area, hallway, building entrance, desk or window orientation. That may be harmless, but each omission is a question to ask. Prioritize proof of usable space and current condition over professionally edited lighting.
Seven photo tricks to screen
- Ultrawide room photography makes floor space look larger.
- Model-unit photos show furniture not in the actual apartment.
- Older images omit recent wear or construction outside.
- Closed-window images hide street and neighbor noise.
- Bright edits conceal gloomy interior daylight.
- Cropped angles omit damaged bathrooms, old kitchens or entry stairs.
- View photos from another floor create an inaccurate balcony expectation.
Any one could be an innocent marketing choice. Ask for continuous dated video instead of assuming bad intent.
Check before you pay
- Uninterrupted room-to-room video requested
- Exact unit and current furnishings confirmed
