Choosing a Bogotá Apartment for Remote Work: Internet and Power Checks

Speed tests, backup connectivity, desk, noise and service obligations. Practical questions and a script to send the operator.

Internet performance needs proof, not a badge. For a furnished stay, look past the listing headline and confirm details about the specific unit and agreement before committing funds.

Test the right connection

Ask for a screenshot or live test over the unit’s fixed Wi-Fi while the tester stands at the intended desk. The upload speed and latency can matter as much as download speed for video calls. Confirm the service provider and whether the apartment shares a connection with neighboring units. A screenshot from a different property or from a cellular handset is not a useful guarantee.

Inspect the work surface

A kitchen bar is not a full-time workstation. Request a photo of the desk, chair, power outlets and daylight from the actual work position. Look for glare, street-facing windows, room for an external monitor and a place to close a door during calls. Ask how many people may be working remotely simultaneously.

Plan for power and connection failures

Mobile backup can be useful, but coverage varies building by building and some units have weak reception indoors. Ask whether the building has generator support and what systems it actually powers. Do not assume a generator covers Wi-Fi, elevators or all outlets. If an uninterrupted connection is mission-critical, carry your own redundancy and work from a tested alternative location.

Make service responsibility contractual

Ask who reports outages to the ISP, whether the monthly internet service is included, and how repairs are coordinated. Do not accept “fiber available” as proof that the unit is subscribed. For a 30- or 60-day booking, have the operator confirm service details in writing before your payment becomes nonrefundable.

Check before you pay

  • Live upload/download/latency test from desk
  • Desk and ergonomic chair shown in unit
  • Confirm ISP, router location and login
  • Check independent cellular coverage
  • Document outage contact and responsibilities

Copy this message to the manager

“We work remotely with daily video calls. Please send a current Wi-Fi speed test from the unit’s desk, a photo of the chair and workstation, and the ISP/backup information.”
